Ive heard a lot of media folks in Calgary claim that its the greatest sports city in the world. Steelers 56 Jersey . Obviously not the truth. Not even close. But if you watched last Saturdays NLL Western Conference Championship game from the Saddledome, youre probably wondering if Calgary even qualifies as a sports town at all. Only around 9,500 Calgarians showed up at the 19,000-seat arena to watch their hometown Roughnecks win the Western division banner. For any city, thats an embarrassing number of empty seats. Lets be clear; the Riggers arent a D-list team playing in small-time league at a local Legion hall or hockey barn. The Roughnecks are the citys third (or, at worst, fourth) biggest sports franchise. They play in the best venue in C-town, representing Calgary in the lacrosse equivalent of the NHL. And theyre good. Not only is the product itself flashy and exciting (and affordable), but Calgary is easily the top team in the NLL right now. So while loyal fans half-filled the arena to watch Calgary score 14 unanswered goals last weekend (including the highlight reel game-winner from goalie Matt King, scoring from his own crease), the rest of the city seemed to have other things to do. So, step up Calgary. Being a sports city doesnt mean band-wagoning behind your hockey team when theyre doing well, or showing up for CFL games when the weathers nice. If any other city held Canadas last chance for a major sports championship, and their team were on a record-setting roll? I think the town could muster up a full arena. Just sayin. The NLL Final is tonight at the Saddledome. Calgary Roughnecks vs. the New York Titans, in a game that could just as easily have been played at Madison Square Garden if the regular season cards had fallen a little differently. This is a huge, huge deal. The mayor of New York City is even doing the friendly bet routine with Calgarys mayor. A lot of eyes around North America will be on this game, and the worst thing a host city can do is provide a sea of red... empty seats. If a cup is lifted in the woods, and no ones there to hear it? Houston was 12th, but suffered a 58-41 loss at UTEP. Michigan was ranked 22nd, but a 26-20 overtime loss at Michigan State knocked out the Wolverines. A 42-3 setback at Oregon dropped the Bears to 24th and the fall was complete this weekend with the home pounding at the hands of USC.
